Monkey Family

As we left our little house this morning, we were greeted by a family of monkeys!!! I took a video so you could see how cute they are- just follow the Vimeo link below:) I apologize for the shaking and overall unsteadiness of the footage- to my credit we were surprised as more and more of the little things kept coming out of the jungle.

We trekked north to Speightstown after leaving the monkey family this morning and jumped off the bus at every church we saw along the route. One of my favorites was the St. James Parish Church, it is one of the oldest churches on the island, built in 1628, and is home to a beautiful big bell given to the church by King William in 1696. We attended a service at the St. Peter's Parish Church next and had a funny experience. As soon as the services were over, the priest came right up to us and thanked us for coming and then invited us into his office. We followed, a bit confused but delighted to get straight down to business. When we all sat down in his office he proceeded to pull out his certification papers and asked us to sign them. He thought that we were from the theological college and were there to officially sign him off as a fully fledged priest! We explained that we were just students from the US and that we are working on a project photographing the many different religions of Barbados. He laughed and said that we did look a bit young to be from the college and then let us take his portrait. We also got to meet and talk with the organist, Vincent. He was so nice and very talented and let me take several pictures of him playing.

There were so many kind people and beautiful buildings that we lost track of time and had to scramble to grab a bus back into Bridgetown as the day wore on. We found our way over the harbor bridge and to the blue cathedral of St. Mary's Church. We made it to the tail end of the services there and met the first woman minister that we have encountered so far. Reverend Jilian Crawford was her name and she was so happy to get visitors. She invited us to have refreshments with some of her staff members and let me take all the pictures I wanted.

Feet sore and drenched with sweat (gross, I know, sorry!) we went back home and changed into swim suits! yay for beach time!!! Also, on our way back to the house, we saw our little monkey family again, this time with handfuls of mangoes, and a cute little lizard!
